Are you ready for the 2026 refrigerant changes?

Technician testing continuity

On January 1, 2026, new requirements will take effect for modular and field-assembled refrigeration systems, including larger walk-in boxes and split systems. Any system delivered or installed on or after January 1, 2026 must use A2L refrigerants. It does not matter when the order is placed. What matters is the delivery and installation date.

This is the second phase of a transition already underway. The first milestone came on January 1, 2025, when self-contained refrigeration equipment such as reach-in refrigerators and freezers began shipping with A2L refrigerants.

For operators, the key point is that existing systems are not affected. You can continue to service and maintain the equipment you already own with its original refrigerant. The new rules apply only to systems manufactured, shipped, or installed after the compliance dates.

The reason is environmental. A2L refrigerants provide the same performance while carrying far less global warming potential than traditional HFCs. Regulators and manufacturers see this as a vital step toward sustainability and long-term climate goals.

The practical takeaway is to plan ahead. If you have a large refrigeration project scheduled for 2026, make sure equipment is delivered and installed before January 1 if it is not A2L compliant. After that date, only A2L-compliant systems can move forward. Aligning purchases and installation schedules now will help you avoid costly delays.

At Acme Paper & Supply, we recognize that regulations continue to evolve. We stay engaged with manufacturers and industry groups so our clients are never caught off guard. More importantly, we work with our partners to design transition strategies that fit their business, from timing deliveries to planning replacements.

If you have questions about how these changes may affect your operation, now is the time to start the conversation. Our team is here to help you plan ahead, stay compliant, and make informed decisions that strengthen your business for the future.
